Today, I messed around with a watch, trying to make a Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227J-001. It’s a really classic style, you know? I’ve always liked those vintage watches, especially the Calatrava ones. I heard somewhere that Patek Philippe put out the Reference 96 back in 1932, the same year that the Stern family, who were into dial making, took over Patek Philippe. So, that’s kind of cool, right?
I started by getting a basic watch body. I wanted that 18ct yellow gold case look, so I went with something similar. It wasn’t the real deal, of course, but it gave the same vibe. Then, there’s the glass. I made sure to use a piece that looked like sapphire crystal – you know, the scratch-resistant kind? It’s gotta look tough and classy at the same time.
The dial was a big deal. I wanted that cream-colored face that gives it an antique feel. I spent a good chunk of time getting the color just right. It wasn’t easy, but after a few tries, I got a shade that I think looked pretty good. It’s amazing how that color alone can give the watch a totally different character.
I also tried to copy those pure lines that everyone talks about with Calatrava watches. It’s all about being simple and elegant, right? I didn’t add anything too fancy, just kept it clean and neat.

- Finally, keep the design simple, no extra stuff.
Putting it all together was kind of tricky. I mean, I’m not a watchmaker or anything, but I think I did okay. It took most of the day, fiddling around with the parts and all. The end result? Well, it’s not a real Patek Philippe, but it definitely looks like a classy, vintage watch. I was pretty stoked about how it turned out.
Honestly, this whole thing was more about the fun of making something than anything else. I really enjoy getting my hands dirty and seeing a project come to life. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll get my hands on a real Calatrava. But for now, I’m happy with my little homemade version.
