Alright, let’s talk about this whole OMEGA X-33 Marstimer thing. It all started when I saw this watch online, and I was like, “What’s this all about?” It’s part of the Speedmaster series, but it looked different, you know? So, I started digging around.
First thing I did was try to find some info on it. I read that it’s called the Speedmaster X-33 Marstimer and that it’s made with some help from the European Space Agency. Sounds fancy, right? And the name itself, “Marstimer,” kinda gives away that it has something to do with Mars.
Then I started looking at what people were saying about it. Some folks were saying it’s OMEGA just showing off, making a watch specifically for the space folks. Others were saying it’s all about “dead reckoning,” which is some old-school way of figuring out where you are when you’re exploring. I guess it makes sense since it’s a space watch.
I even found some operating instructions for it online. It’s a PDF, and it’s pretty detailed. It’s got all these different functions, and it’s not your average watch, that’s for sure.
Here’s what I gathered about the watch itself:

So, I decided I wanted to copy it and make a “CopyOMEGA Ω X-33 Marstimer”. I started by getting some materials. I couldn’t get grade 2 titanium, so I settled for some regular metal I found at a hardware store. It’s not the same, but it’ll do for now.
Next, I had to figure out how to make it look like the real thing. I printed out some pictures of the watch and started sketching. I’m no artist, but I did my best to copy the design. I used some basic tools I had lying around – a ruler, a marker, some scissors. It was a bit of a mess, but I managed to get a rough shape.
Then came the hard part – making it actually work like a watch. I’m not an engineer, so this was way out of my league. I found an old digital watch I had and took it apart. I figured I could use the guts of that watch and somehow fit it into my metal case. It was a lot of trial and error, and I almost gave up a few times, but I finally got it to work. Sort of. It tells time, but that’s about it. None of the fancy Mars features.
In the end, I have something that kinda looks like the OMEGA X-33 Marstimer, but it’s definitely not the real deal. It was a fun project, though. I learned a lot about watches, space, and my own limitations. Would I do it again? Maybe. But next time, I’ll probably just save up and buy the real thing.
It’s been an interesting journey, to say the least. From seeing a cool watch online to trying to recreate it myself, it’s been a wild ride. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll actually go to Mars and test out the real OMEGA X-33 Marstimer. Or maybe I’ll just stick to my homemade version. We’ll see.
