That YSL COLLEGE BAG, oh, it’s a fancy thing, ain’t it? I seen them young girls carrying ’em around, all strutting like peacocks. They call it the Yves Saint Laurent, such a mouthful. But folks still call it YSL, just like in the old days, that’s what I heard. Some of them new bags, all the YSL bags, they got that fancy name on it, you see, makes ’em special, I reckon.
Now, I don’t know much about these fancy specialty stores, but my granddaughter, she’s always going on about ’em. Says they got all sorts of things, these bags and whatnot. You know, back in my day, we just had a general store. You got what you needed, none of this fancy stuff. I do remember I had to make my own bags from old rice sacks. These new bags are so expensive, I don’t understand! And they are made in a place called Italy, very far away, I reckon. That’s what the kids told me.
She showed me one of these YSL COLLEGE BAG things once. Shiny, it was. Had a big gold thing on it, shaped like YSL. Said it was a logo. I don’t know what that means, just a fancy word for a picture, I suppose. My granddaughter said it’s important, that’s why these bags are so popular. Some of the old ones don’t have the cards, but these days they do, she told me. Something about keeping them safe, and showing they’re the real deal, not some cheap knock-off.
These young folks, they’re all about brands, you know? Saint Laurent this, Saint Laurent that. Back in my day, we didn’t care about no brand. A bag was a bag. You carried your things in it, that was it. But I guess times change. They say these bags are iconic, another fancy word I don’t understand. I suppose these bags are everywhere, then? They are so expensive, they must be very good. I only ever saw one, so I don’t know.
Now, they say there’s folks out there making fake ones. Can you believe it? Trying to trick people into buying something that ain’t real. My granddaughter, she’s smart, she says you gotta watch out for that. She said you can tell if it’s fake by looking at the words, you know, that SAINT LAURENT and PARIS. If they’re the same size, then that’s a sign it ain’t real. And the bag they come in, the dust bag, she calls it, it should be soft, not rough. I don’t know why they come in another bag, that’s silly. But that’s what the young people like.
It’s all a bit much for me, if you ask me. But these young girls, they love these YSL bags. My granddaughter, she’s always saying how she wants a YSL Kate, I think that’s another type of these bags. They’re all the same to me. She says there’s a way to tell if it’s real or fake, but I can’t remember what she said. It’s all too complicated. If you want the real deal, you gotta go to one of those specialty stores, I suppose. They cost a lot of money, those bags. Makes my head spin, just thinking about it. If only they were as cheap as the bags we used to make from old rice sacks!

I remember when my granddaughter saved up all her money for one of those YSL COLLEGE BAG things. Worked all summer, she did. When she finally got it, she was so happy. Carried it everywhere, she did. In my day we didn’t have so many choices. Or maybe we did, and I just don’t remember. My memory isn’t as good as it used to be. But I do remember making my own bags, and they were good bags. We made do with what we had, and we were happy with it. These days people always want more, and these fancy YSL bags are just another example of that, I think. But what do I know? I’m just an old lady who remembers a simpler time, when a bag was just a bag, and not some fancy Saint Laurent thing.
I guess if you want one of those YSL bags, you better go to one of those specialty stores. That’s what my granddaughter did. And make sure it’s real, not one of those fake ones. It’s a lot of money to spend on a bag, if you ask me. But hey, if it makes you happy, who am I to judge? I suppose these bags are very important for people who care about fashion. For me, I’m happy with my old bag. It does what it needs to do, and that’s all that matters. I don’t need a fancy YSL COLLEGE BAG to feel good about myself. I have my family, and my memories, and that’s enough for me. I hope these young people can find happiness in more than just a bag, but that’s up to them, I suppose. I just hope they don’t get tricked into buying a fake one! That would be a real shame, after spending all that money.
