Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to get my hands on an OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch for a while now. You know, the classic one with the open case back. It’s just such a beautiful piece, and I love being able to see the inner workings of a watch. It’s like a little city in there.

I finally decided to go for it. First thing I did was to look around a bunch of different places, just to get an idea of what’s out there. I’m not familiar with OROVIVO or Netzshopping, but they seemed to have a lot of top brand watches with good prices. I didn’t buy anything there though, because I wasn’t ready yet.

Then, I started hitting up some forums. I found some threads on these watch forums. People were talking about all sorts of things, like how to open the case back without ruining the watch, and which Speedmasters have the right kind of case back. There was even some stuff about the movement, like the calibre 1863 and how it uses rhodium-plated parts. I don’t really know what that means, but it sounds fancy, right?

After digging around for a while, I figured out that I wanted one of the older models with the beveled edge on the case back. And it has to have the open case back. I just like the old ones, they’re the real deal.

So, I started hunting for a specific model, the 311.30.42.30.01.005. I think that’s the one. After scouring different sites, I found one. It was a used one, a 1971 model apparently. It was in pretty decent shape, considering its age.

I pulled the trigger and bought it. When it arrived, I was like a kid on Christmas morning. I carefully opened the box, and there it was. It was even more beautiful in person. The first thing I did was flip it over and look at the case back. And there it was, the movement ticking away. So cool! I’m pretty sure I stared at it for like an hour.

Here’s what I found after I got it:

  • It’s the real deal. It’s an authentic Speedmaster, not a fake or anything. I checked all the markings, and they seem legit.
  • It’s got some history. Being a 1971 model, it’s definitely got some wear and tear. There’s some scratches on the crystal, and the bracelet is a bit loose. But that’s okay, it adds character.
  • The movement is mesmerizing. I could watch that thing tick all day. It’s so intricate and precise.
  • It keeps good time. I’ve been wearing it for a few days now, and it seems to be keeping time pretty accurately. Not bad for a 50-year-old watch!

All in all, I’m super happy with my purchase. It’s definitely a watch that I’ll treasure for years to come. It’s not just a watch, it’s a piece of history. Now I’m thinking about getting it serviced, just to make sure everything is running smoothly. And maybe I’ll even try to polish out some of those scratches. We’ll see. Maybe I’ll post an update after I get it serviced. It’s been a fun ride, and I’m glad I finally got my Moonwatch!
