Today, I tried to get this OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, the one with the open case back. You know, the original order one. It was quite a journey, so I thought I’d share my experience with you guys.
First off, I did some digging online. This watch, it’s also known as the Moonwatch. The classic model, 311.30.42.30.01.005, has a stainless steel back. But the one I’m after, 311.30.42.30.01.006, that’s the one with the see-through back. I’ve always liked watching the gears and stuff, so this was a must-have for me.
I found out these watches were worn by astronauts on all six moon landings. Pretty cool, huh? The design is iconic. It’s got that 42mm stainless steel case, the three subdials… you know the look.
Now, about getting my hands on one. I looked at a bunch of places. I saw one from 1991, with the box and warranty, listed as “very good” condition. It made in January of * was another one, a pre-owned model, stainless steel with a black dial and stick markers. I also saw new ones, listed with original box and papers, going for something around $6,000 to $7,379. So many options.
After a lot of back and forth, I decided to go for a new one. Yeah, it’s a bit pricier, but I wanted that fresh-out-of-the-box feeling. Plus, with the transparent back, I can stare at that beautiful movement all day long. I finally got it.
But here’s a word of caution, if you ever want to open the case back yourself, be careful! I read somewhere that a gouge on the case back from a failed opening will ruin your watch experience. Better to use a three-pronged opener. Anyway, I’m not planning to open it myself anytime soon. Just looking at it through the transparent back is enough for me.
So, there you have it. My adventure of getting an OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch with the open case back. It was worth every penny. This beauty is going to be on my wrist for a long, long time.
